George Millican, a descendant of the Scott clan of Scotland, bought land on the Mckenzie River in the fall of 1862. He made his fortune mining for gold and running cattle. After some time, he donated land so his brother Robert Millican could build a school. When the school closed down, George’s son Walter, who Walterville is named after, donated the land and building to the Walterville Grange and the Welcome Rebekah Lodge on the condition it be used as a community center.
