Milepost 10.5

The first of many stagecoach stops on the way up the McKenzie River was built in Cedar Flat. Today, Patsy’s Stage Stop is built on that historic site. Cedar Flat is also only a mile away from where Caswell Hendrick built the ferry bearing his name. He ran the ferry from 1862 until he retired and gave the operation to his son Grant. The ferry was in operation until 1897 until the Hendricks Bridge was built.

Samuel Sparks, who later founded the town Blue River thirty miles east, settled his family in Cedar Flat.

Kintigh’s Tree Farm is located on Cedar Flat Road. The Kintigh family farm was chosen in 1995 to supply the Christmas tree for the White House in D.C. Their rhododendron gardens are open to the public for tours in the spring. Groceries, gas, deli foods, drive-through espresso, and auto repairs may be obtained in Cedar Flat. — McKenzie River Reflections
