The Monumental task of constructing three flood control and hydropower projects brought hundreds of families into the Blue River area. The McKenzie Highway was connected with the Santiam Highway, making it open to the east all year long. This and the timber industry created a booming population that supported three gas stations, two taverns, two restaurants, a new wing on the local school and library.
