Leander Cruzan, the first postmaster in the area, named the town after himself. The community grew enough that they had to build a school for the children in 1892. More families moved to the area and the single-story one room school wasn’t big enough anymore, so folk tore down the little school to use the lumber on a second, larger school. Still more people moved to the town, so they added rooms and even a second story to the school. In the early 1920s, the school collapsed due to the weight and faulty design.
