Fire Lookout have been used for over a hundred years to spot wildland fires in Oregon. The Forest Service first sent people to be lookouts on Castle Rock in 1911, but the tower wasn’t completed until 1923. All in all, it took sixty packhorse loads to get the materials needed to the top of Castle Rock. At the time, it was regarded as the finest lookout tower in the Cascades. Unfortunately, vandals burned it down in 1974, but it’s still a popular hike with an amazing view.
