Martin Rapids are among the toughest and most fun rapids on the McKenzie River. Carl Dehne first ran them in 1914. He told the four Thomson brothers next store how he did it. Soon Milo Thomson began guiding lodge guests through the rapids for a price. The characteristics of the McKenzie River coupled with its popularity, caused boatmakers to rethink how they built boats. Wooden boats with flat bottoms and squared off edges became known nation-wide as the McKenzie River Drift Boat, which is still celebrated and used today.
